Excess skin on the upper eyelids quickly makes patients look tired and old. However, older patients in particular often have sunken eyebrows at the same time, which are often unnoticed. Therefore, a combined procedure of upper eyelid lift and eyebrow lift is occasionally useful.
How is the upper eyelid lift performed?
During the upper eyelid lift, the excess skin of the upper eyelids is surgically removed. If necessary, the fatty tissue can be removed in depth or redistributed
How is an eyebrow lift performed?
With a direct eyebrow lift, the position of the eyebrows is raised by removing the skin directly above the eyebrows without reducing the wrinkles on the forehead.
With a temporal eyebrow lift, the outer part of the eyebrows as well as part of the middle eyebrow region is lifted through an incision in the hairy temple region. With a forehead lift, the deep wrinkles in the forehead and the entire position of the eyebrows are corrected at the same time.
What happens if only the upper eyelids are lifted and the eyebrows are lowered at the same time?
If the upper eyelids are tightened without treating the sunken eyebrows, the eyebrows will be lowered, which is cosmetically disturbing.
This mechanism occurs because the activity of the forehead muscle is deactivated by the removal of the skin from the upper eyelids and a lowering of the eyebrows occurs.
How can sunken eyebrows be checked?
A typical clinical sign of sunken eyebrows is excess skin, especially in the outer area of the upper eyelids. If, for example, Botox is also injected into the forehead muscle, the eyebrows are lowered. Therefore, when the forehead is treated with botulinum toxin, the eyebrows often have to be treated as well.
Does it need an anaesthetic?
The procedure can often be performed under local anaesthesia or in so-called twilight sleep on an outpatient basis. A general anaesthetic is recommended for a forehead lift.
What are the possible side effects?
After the operation, there may be blue discolouration and swelling in the area of the operation. You should therefore take it easy on yourself after the operation and keep your upper body elevated. Temporary numbness and tension in the scar area are possible.
When does the insurance cover part of the operation costs?
Insurance companies very rarely cover the procedure and only if there is a significant reduction in the field of vision.
